Dak Mang Proposed Nature Reserve
Management history There is very little information available about Dak Mang proposed nature reserve, which is not listed on any government decision or official set of proposals relating to the protected areas network (MARD 1997, FPD 2003). According to MARD (1997), in 1995, Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee proposed establishing a 30,000 ha nature reserve at the site. However, it is not known whether or not this proposal was implemented. Topography and hydrology Dak Mang proposed nature reserve is located in Dak Mil district in the Central Highlands. The proposed nature reserve is situated in the catchment of the Srepok river. The proposed nature reserve has a relatively flat topography, and ranges in elevation from c.350 to c.750 m. Biodiversity values Remote sensing data indicate that the vegetation of Dak Mang proposed nature reserve is dominated by agricultural land and scrub, although the site appears to also support significant areas of lowland deciduous forest and lowland evergreen forest. Field surveys are required, however, to ground truth these data. Conservation issues National Highway 14 passes through the centre of Dak Mang proposed nature reserve. Remote sensing data indicate that this road has acted as a focus for the settlement of migrants into Dak Lak province, as the natural vegetation along both sides of the road has been extensively cleared for agricultural land. If the planned upgrade of this road to National Highway 2 goes ahead, it may facilitate the settlement of more migrants in the area, and lead to further loss of natural vegetation. Other documented values The landscape of Dak Mang is very scenic, and Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee plan to develop the site for tourism. Related projects No information. Conservation needs assessment A conservation needs assessment has not been conducted for the site. Operational management plan An operational management plan has not been prepared for the site. Eligibility against VCF criteria Dak Mang is ineligible for VCF support because it does not meet the criteria for supporting forest biodiversity of international importance. The site lies within Priority Landscape DF4 - Eastern Plains Dry Forests but was assessed by a subsequent analysis as having low importance for international biodiversity conservation (Tordoff et al. in prep.). In addition, the site is not under appropriate conservation management.
Social screening requirements A social screening report has not been prepared for the site.
