Hon Khoai Proposed Cultural and Historical Site
Management history Hon Khoai is not listed on any government decree or national-level proposal relating to protected areas (MARD 1997, FPD 2003). However, on 14 June 1995, a Special-use Forest management board was established for the site (Ca Mau Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). Subsequently, an investment plan, covering the period from 2001 to 2002, was approved by Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, following Decision No. 1251/QD-CTUB, dated 25 December 2001. The total area of the proposed cultural and historical site is 561 ha, comprising a strict protection area of 459 ha, a forest rehabilitation area of 73 ha and an administration and services area of 29 ha (Ca Mau Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). Topography and hydrology Hon Khoai proposed cultural and historical site is centred on Hon Khoai island, a 4 km-long island situated 12 km of the coast of Vietnam in Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province. The highest point on the island is 318 m. The proposed cultural and historical site also contains three smaller islands. Biodiversity values No information. Conservation issues The main threats to biodiversity at Hon Khoai identified by Ca Mau Provincial FPD (in litt. 2000) are exploitation of forest products and forest fires. In addition, Ca Mau Provincial Department of Fisheries is currently constructing a fishing port on Hon Khoai island (Ca Mau Provincial FPD in litt. 2003), which could potentially lead to an increase in the human population on the island, and, therefore, increased pressure on natural resources. Other documented values Due to its scenic beauty, Hon Khoai proposed cultural and historical site has potential for the development of ecotourism (Ca Mau Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). Related projects Ca Mau Provincial Department of Culture and Information is supporting a project to restore historical sites at Hon Khoai (Ca Mau Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). Conservation needs assessment A conservation needs assessment has not been conducted for the site. Operational management plan An operational management plan has not been prepared for the site. Eligibility against VCF criteria Hon Khoai is ineligible for VCF support because it does not meet the criteria for supporting forest biodiversity of international importance. In addition, Hon Khoai is a cultural and historical site.
Social screening requirements A social screening report has not been prepared for the site.
