Nui Sam Proposed Cultural and Historical Site
Management history Nui Sam is not included on any government decision of official set of proposals regarding the national protected areas system (MARD 1997, FPD 2003). However, a cultural and historical site management board was established on 10 March 1993, following Decision No. 382/QD-UBXD of An Giang Provincial People's Committee. The management board currently has 12 members of staff, based at a single guard station (Le Van Hoang, Vice-director of Nui Sam Cultural and Historical Site in litt. 2003). According to Le Van Hoang, the Vice-director (in litt. 2003), the area of the proposed cultural and historical site is 177 ha, and there is no buffer zone. The proposed cultural and historical site is under the management of An Giang Provincial People's Committee. Topography and hydrology Nui Sam is a hill that rises abruptly from the surrounding plain. Nui Sam is situated in the Mekong Delta, to the west of the Bassac River, and is surrounded by a flat plain dominated by wet rice agriculture and seasonally inundated grasslands. Tordoff pers. obs.). Conservation issues A total of 907 people live inside the proposed cultural and historical site (Le Van Hoang, Vice-director of Nui Sam Cultural and Historical Site in litt. 2003).
