Management history

There is a degree of inconsistency concerning the name and area of the site. In 1991, the site was included on Decision No. 2009/QDVH of the Ministry of Culture and Information, under the name Ghenh Rang. On the basis of this decision, Ghenh Rang was included on a list of Special-use Forests to be established by the year 2010, prepared by the FPD of MARD, as a 2,616 ha cultural and historical site (FPD 2003); this list has not yet been approved by the government. According to Binh Dinh Provincial FPD (in litt. 2003), however, the name of the site is Quy Hoa-Ghenh Rang, and the total area is 5,555 ha.

An investment plan for the site, prepared by Binh Dinh Provincial FPD, was approved by the provincial people's committee on 6 March 1997; this investment plan has not yet been approved by MARD. Over 800 ha of forest land at the site were allocated to local households under the national 327 Programme, a further 727 ha are under the management of Quy Nhon Forest Enterprise, and the remainder of the site is currently managed by Ghenh Rang Commune People's Committee (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003).

Topography and hydrology

Ghenh Rang proposed cultural and historical site is located in Quy Nhon city, in the coastal zone of central Vietnam. The proposed cultural and historical site lies in an area of low mountains to the south of the city, and ranges in elevation from sea level to 860 m.

Biodiversity values

There is no natural forest at Ghenh Rang proposed cultural and historical site. Land-use at the site comprises 1,527 ha of plantation forest, 2,574 ha of bare land, 207 ha of agricultural land and 186 ha of other uses (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). Due to the absence of natural habitats and the close proximity of the site to Quy Nhon city, Ghenh Rang can be expected to have limited biodiversity value.

Conservation issues

Over 65,000 people live in the buffer zone of the proposed cultural and historical site. The main threats to biodiversity are perceived to be hunting of wildlife, forest fire and fuelwood collection (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD and Ghenh Rang Commune People's Committee in litt. 2003).

Other documented values

The objectives of establishing a cultural and historical site at Ghenh Rang were to protect the beautiful scenery to the east of National Highway 1 between Quy Nhon and Song Cau towns, and to develop ecotourism (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2000). However, because of the complete loss of natural forest cover, the landscape and amenity values of the site have already been compromised.

Related projects

Ghenh Rang proposed cultural and historical site is the focus of the on-going Ghenh Rang-Quy Nhon Plantation Project (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003).
