Management history

Vuon Cam Nguyen Hue is not included on any government decision or official set of proposals relating to the Special-use Forests system (MARD 1997, FPD 2003). However, the site has been decreed as an historical site by the Ministry of Culture and Information (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003).

To date, a Special-use Forest management board has not been established for Vuon Cam Nguyen Hue, and the site is under the management of Song Kon Forest Enterprise (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003). According to Binh Dinh Provincial FPD (in litt. 2003), the total area of the site is 800 ha, with a buffer zone of 3,000 ha.

Topography and hydrology

Vuon Cam Nguyen Hue proposed cultural and historical site is located in Vinh Son commune, Vinh Thanh district, western Binh Dinh province. The proposed cultural and historical site is situated at the eastern edge of the central Annamites, and the site ranges in elevation from c.800 to c.1,000 m. The proposed cultural and historical site is drained by the Dak Som stream, which feeds the Con river. The Con river flows into the Say river, which, in turn, flows into Quy Nhon lagoon.

Biodiversity values

Vuon Cam Nguyen Hue proposed cultural and historical site is located at the eastern extent of a large, contiguous block of lower montane evergreen forest, which includes both Kon Cha Rang Nature Reserve and An Toan proposed nature reserve (see separate site cards). However, there is no specific information available about the biodiversity values of the site.

Conservation issues

The buffer zone has a population of around 2,500 people, mainly from the Ba Na ethnic group. The main threats to biodiversity at the site are reportedly illegal hunting and trapping of wildlife (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2000, 2003). An area of 500 ha within the proposed cultural and historical site is being protected by ethnic minority households from Vinh Son commune (Binh Dinh Provincial FPD in litt. 2003).

Other documented values

The establishment of a cultural and historical site at Vuon Cam Nguyen Hue was proposed to protect the base of King Quang Trung (also known as Nguyen Hue). King Quang Trung, the founder of the Tay Son dynasty, was a great soldier and diplomat, and repelled the Manchurian invasion of 1789.

Related projects

The national 661 Programme is currently supporting forest protection activities at the site.

Conservation needs assessment

A conservation needs assessment has not been conducted for the site.

Operational management plan

An operational management plan has not been prepared for the site.

Eligibility against VCF criteria

The site is ineligible for VCF support because it does not meet the criteria for supporting forest biodiversity of international importance. The site is situated within Priority Landscape CA1 but it was assessed by a subsequent analysis as having low importance for international biodiversity conservation (Tordoff et al. 2003).  In addition, the site is a cultural and historical site, and it is not under appropriate conservation management.
