Cu Chi Proposed Cultural and Historical Site
Management history Cu Chi is not included on any government decision or official set of proposals regarding the national Special-use Forests system (MARD 1997, FPD 2003). However, an investment plan to establish a cultural and historical site at Cu Chi was prepared in 2000 and approved by Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 2003. To date, however, this investment plan has not been approved by MARD (Ho Chi Minh City FPD in litt. 2003). According to Ho Chi Minh City FPD verbally (2003), the proposed cultural and historical site comprises two sectors: Ben Dinh, with a total area of 49 ha; and Ben Duoc, with a total area of 142 ha. A cultural and historical site management board has been established, under the management of Cu Chi District People's Committee. Topography and hydrology Cu Chi Proposed Cultural and Historical Site is situated in Cu Chi district in northern Ho Chi Minh City. The site is situated on a plain, to the west of the Sai Gon river, and the topography is gently rolling. Biodiversity values The proposed cultural and historical site supports a fragment of natural forest. Due its small size, isolation and degraded nature, this patch of natural forest probably does not support significant populations of plant and animal species of global conservation concern. Conservation issues No information. Other documented values Cu Chi proposed cultural and historical site preserves part of an extensive tunnel network used by resistance forces during the First and Second Indochina Wars. Due to its historical significance and proximity to Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi has been developed as a major attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Related projects No information. Conservation needs assessment A conservation needs assessment has not been conducted for the site. Operational management plan An operational management plan has not been prepared for the site. Eligibility against VCF criteria Cu Chi is ineligible for VCF support because it does not meet the criteria for supporting forest biodiversity of international importance. In addition, Cu Chi is a cultural and historical site.
Social screening requirements A social screening report has not been prepared for the site.
